GATE Civil Engineering: A Free YouTube Study Plan

A free study plan for GATE Civil Engineering using NPTEL and YouTube lectures: subject order, a 24-week schedule, PYQ strategy and revision.

You can prepare for GATE Civil Engineering (CE) without paid coaching. NPTEL has full IIT-faculty courses on nearly every CE subject, and several coaching institutes and independent teachers post free lectures on YouTube. What free preparation lacks is a plan and a test series, and both can be built. This page gives you the subject order, a 24-week schedule and a revision method that works with free material.

Know the exam first

GATE is a 3-hour computer-based test with 65 questions for 100 marks: General Aptitude carries 15 marks, and the rest is Engineering Mathematics plus Civil Engineering subjects. Questions are MCQ, MSQ (multiple correct) and NAT (numerical answer). MCQs carry negative marking; MSQs and NATs do not. Civil Engineering is usually held in two sessions (CE1 and CE2) with separate papers. Always check the official syllabus and information brochure published by the organizing IIT for your exam year. Details like dates and session splits change.

Subjects and where to learn them free

| Subject group | Main topics | Free sources | |---|---|---| | Engineering Mathematics | Linear algebra, calculus, ODEs, probability, numerical methods | NPTEL maths courses; free GATE maths playlists from coaching channels | | Structural Engineering | Engineering mechanics, solid mechanics, structural analysis, RCC, steel | NPTEL (IIT faculty) courses on each; free GATE CE playlists | | Geotechnical Engineering | Soil mechanics, foundation engineering | NPTEL soil mechanics and foundation courses | | Water Resources | Fluid mechanics, hydraulics, hydrology, irrigation | NPTEL fluid mechanics and hydrology | | Environmental Engineering | Water and wastewater, air pollution, solid waste | NPTEL environmental engineering courses | | Transportation Engineering | Highway design, pavements, traffic engineering | NPTEL transportation engineering courses | | Geomatics | Surveying, GIS and remote sensing basics | NPTEL surveying courses | | General Aptitude | Verbal, numerical and analytical reasoning | Free aptitude playlists; previous papers | NPTEL lectures are thorough but long and university-paced. Free coaching-channel playlists (from GATE-focused channels such as those run by major coaching institutes) are faster and more exam-oriented. Many students use coaching playlists for first learning and NPTEL for topics they need to understand more deeply.

Subject order that works

Start with subjects that other subjects depend on: 1. **Engineering Mechanics, then Solid Mechanics.** Structural Analysis, RCC and Steel all build on these. 2. **Fluid Mechanics,** before Hydraulics, Hydrology and Irrigation. 3. **Soil Mechanics,** before Foundation Engineering. 4. **Engineering Mathematics** in parallel, one or two topics a week. 5. **Environmental, Transportation, Geomatics** later; these are more self-contained and easier to revise close to the exam. 6. **General Aptitude** weekly throughout. Fifteen marks is a lot to leave on the table.

A 24-week schedule

Assumes 4 to 5 hours on weekdays and more on weekends; stretch it if you are in final year or working. - **Weeks 1 to 4:** Engineering Mechanics, Solid Mechanics. Maths: linear algebra. - **Weeks 5 to 8:** Structural Analysis, RCC. Maths: calculus. - **Weeks 9 to 10:** Steel Structures, Construction Materials and Management. - **Weeks 11 to 13:** Fluid Mechanics, Hydraulics. Maths: differential equations. - **Weeks 14 to 15:** Hydrology, Irrigation. - **Weeks 16 to 18:** Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering. Maths: probability and statistics. - **Weeks 19 to 20:** Environmental Engineering. - **Weeks 21 to 22:** Transportation Engineering, Geomatics. Maths: numerical methods. - **Weeks 23 to 24:** Full revision and full-length mock tests. After each subject, solve that subject's previous year questions (PYQs) before moving on.

Previous year papers are your free test series

PYQs are the single most valuable free resource for GATE. Official past papers and answer keys are available from the GATE websites of the organizing IITs. - **Topic-wise:** after finishing a subject, solve all its PYQs from recent years. - **Full papers:** in the last six weeks, sit full past papers under exam conditions, using the virtual calculator. - **Error log:** for every wrong answer, note the concept, why you got it wrong (concept gap, calculation slip, misread question) and where to revise it. Several platforms and coaching institutes also offer free mock tests close to the exam. Use them for exam-day practice.

Revision and formula retention

Civil has a lot of formulas, codal provisions and empirical values. Two habits make revision manageable: - **A formula sheet per subject,** built as you go, not at the end. - **Spaced review:** short daily sessions reviewing formulas and key facts as flashcards, rather than one big revision at the end. When you are juggling a dozen NPTEL and YouTube playlists, it is easy to lose track. Paste each playlist into Filow to track lecture-by-lecture progress, keep timestamped notes on derivations, and generate flashcards and quizzes for revision.

Questions people ask

Can I crack GATE Civil without coaching?

Yes. Many students prepare using NPTEL lectures, free YouTube playlists, standard textbooks and previous year papers. The keys are a fixed plan, PYQ practice and regular mock tests.

Which subjects carry the most weight in GATE Civil?

Weightage varies by year. Analyze the last several years of papers yourself; structural, geotechnical, water resources and environmental subjects generally form large parts of the paper.

Are NPTEL lectures enough for GATE?

They cover concepts thoroughly, sometimes beyond the syllabus, but are not exam-focused. Pair them with PYQs and some exam-oriented problem practice.

How many months are needed for GATE Civil preparation?

Six to nine months of focused study is common for students starting from college-level knowledge. Working professionals often plan for a year.

Is there negative marking in GATE?

Yes for MCQs: one-third of the marks for 1-mark questions and two-thirds for 2-mark questions. MSQs and NATs have no negative marking.
